safety culture focusing on serious and fatal accidents.
CASE STUDY N°6: Advising and assisting in a long term for the development of a safety culture focusing on serious and fatal accidents.
Project objective
Developing a safety culture focusing on the prevention of serious and fatal injuries (SIF).
The company
An international company operating in the manufacturing of turbines for power plants.
The background of the project
Observing the occurrence of fatal accidents despite a significant drop in the frequency rates, the company decided to launch a specific program targeting serious and fatal injuries.
Summary of DP2i main deliverables
- Facilitation of international working groups to define 20 directives focusing on the most critical activities within the company: Lifting operations, Confined space work, Working at height, Lockout-Tagout, Excavation work, etc.
- Development of tools for implementing the directives: self-assessment tools, team leaders training sessions on the directives with a final exam (and a mark to pass), as well as internal auditors training on the 20 directives.
- Participation in the monthly Safety Committee acting as a steering committee for the roll out of the directives all over the world, chaired and led by the Group Safety Director, bringing together the 4 divisional Safety Directors and their deputies (Transport, Renewable Energy, Power, Transmission and Distribution).
- Training of team leaders in one of the company's branches, focusing on operational risk management practices for the 20 critical operations (5 days with a NEBOSH exam).
- Training of internal auditors responsible for validating the directives’ implementation.
Specificity of the project and DP2i Lessons learned
Specifications for drafting directives required a maximum of 20 requirements per directive, covering technical, organizational, and human aspects, and indicating urgent requirements (maximum 3 per directive) to be implemented within 3 months post-self-evaluation. Team leader trainings under the NEBOSH label concluded with a knowledge exam targeting 75% correct answers based on a questionnaire of 100 multiple-choice questions randomly selected by NEBOSH. DP2i training success rates reached 96% (the highest rate among all contributing training organizations). Despite the high diversity of activities across the company’s 4 branches and differing regulatory references across countries, safety non- negotiable practices proved to be universal with no borders between countries.
